Zoysia japonica boasts a rich, dark green colour that is beautifully maintained throughout the year. It offers a luxurious feel underfoot, with a noticeably soft leaf texture — especially when compared to other Zoysia varieties such as ZT-11. Beneath its lush surface, Zoysia japonica grows through both rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (above-ground runners), forming a dense, uniform turf that effectively resists weeds. The rhizomes also serve as water and nutrient reserves, enhancing the lawn’s ability to withstand dry conditions and providing excellent drought resistance once established. With its slower growth rate during the cooler months, Zoysia japonica requires less maintenance and remains an outstanding choice for achieving a premium, resilient lawn in your garden.

Characteristics.
Deep blueish green colour, fine leaf and a thick growing profile (somewhere in between Buffalo & Couch).
Maintains its colour under harsh sun or in temperate winters.
Durability.
Extremely drought resistant once established.
Has a good salt tolerance in well drained soils.
Grows well in all soil conditions, from sand to heavier poorly drained soils.
Good wear tolerance however, it can also be quite slow to recover from any damage so it is not ideally suited for high constant wear areas.
Deep roots and a tight thatch matrix to keep moisture in and most weeds out.
Maintenance.
Resistant to many insect and fungal pests.
Lower fertiliser requirements means less spraying for you and safer for the environment.
Slow growth rate over the cooler months – less mowing.
